A student union was criticized and accused of racial segregation when it barred white students from participating in Black History Month festivities.

University of Westminster Students' Union has been accused of racial segregation after it banned white students from Black History Month events

The University of Westminster’s union informed students via email that certain events would be “reserved for black students to promote a safe space for discussions and candid interactions.”

Dr. Neil Thin, a lecturer in social anthropology at Edinburgh University, responded by labeling the action unfortunate and accusing the London university of mimicking racial segregation “before observed in South African and United States education systems.”

The Telegraph says that University of Westminster students were not informed of which activities they would be barred from attending during a month celebrating black history with presentations, dance parties, and film screenings.

Students were told in an email that some of the events would be 'reserved for black students to encourage a safe space for discussions and honest conversations'

Dr. Thin stated, “It is cruelly ironic to witness the idea of’safe spaces’ being exploited to justify racial segregation.

Nothing is more likely to make communal areas insecure than the deliberate breeding of interethnic mistrust and discord.

Toby Young, the leader of the Free Speech Union, referred to the organization as extremists who failed to grasp the wider picture.

You would think that at some point it would be obvious to these fundamentalists that you cannot discriminate against individuals based on their race, but they are so deluded by ideological groupthink that they cannot perceive this obvious contradiction.

Toby Young, leader of the Free Speech Union, criticized the student union for failing to recognize the “glaring contradiction”

Sir John Haynes, a member of the Conservative Party, has demanded a probe into the possibility of discrimination.

He also expressed concern about the “dark” nature of the fact that “such thoughts may be spread in a free and open society.”

The student union’s most recent social media post from yesterday emphasized that all students were invited to an event with Zoe Garsh, creator of Ms Independent, which provides career education for young women.

MailOnline has reached out to the student government for comment.

In the meantime, a university spokesperson stated, “One of the institution’s most important Black Lives Matter promises was to remove any gaps connected with success measures for all BME students.” This is precisely what Black History Year Create, an intensive career-defining program designed to overcome inequities among black students, accomplishes.

“Equality of opportunity does not always mean providing everyone access to the same item; it involves leveling the playing field by offering certain programs to those who are underrepresented or have had less access to opportunity.”
