Ian “H” Watkins, a gay member of the band, revealed their decision during the Attitude Pride Awards 2023, an event that honors individuals who have positively impacted the LGBT+ community.

Concerns Over Human Rights Policies

Watkins explained that they declined the gig in Dubai due to the country’s human rights policies, particularly their treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Although they were offered a significant sum of money, Watkins felt uncomfortable with the contractual restriction on discussing his sexuality.

He expressed his unwillingness to participate and encouraged the rest of the group to proceed without him.

Dubai’s Changing Laws and Safety Concerns

Reflecting on a previous concert they performed in Dubai in 2018, Watkins highlighted the significant changes in the country’s laws since then, which he described as even more archaic.

He expressed concerns about the potential dangers he could face as a gay man if they were to perform under the current circumstances.

Violating the government’s laws could lead to imprisonment, making it a risky endeavor.

Taking a Stand and Amplifying the Message

Despite not accepting the Dubai gig, Watkins emphasized the band’s commitment to making a difference.

He mentioned the importance of standing up against oppressive policies and said that their refusal to perform would generate even more attention and create a louder voice for change.

Implications of Legislation on Drag Queens

Discussing recent legislation signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which prohibits children from attending adult live performances, Watkins noted its potential implications for drag queens in the United States and the United Kingdom.

He criticized the focus on issues like these, arguing that the real problem in America is gun control.

Watkins called on individuals with platforms and visibility, including those on social media, to speak out, support, and advocate for positive change.

Steps Stands in Solidarity

Claire Richards, another member of Steps, expressed her support for H and their decision to turn down the Dubai gig.

She emphasized that it aligns with the band’s values and beliefs.

While some may argue for going and “flying the flag,” Richards believes that doing so would only give legitimacy to the oppressive policies in place.

A Celebrated Journey

Formed in 1997 through an advertisement in The Stage entertainment magazine, Steps marked their 20th anniversary in 2017 with a comeback album and a UK tour.

In 2022, they released a Platinum Collection album, showcasing their continued success and enduring popularity.
