“Spending tax dollars”: Huli Ravele criticizes government

Hulisani Revele, a radio personality and host, questioned the Kwazulu-Natal government as to why they committed support for Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo’s funeral. She took her demands for answers to Twitter, where she listed several reasons why she believed taxpayer funds should not be used for the Kwaito star’s send-off.

Mampintsha died of a stroke on Christmas Eve, the last week of December, at King Edward Hospital.

Premier of Kwazulu-Natal Nomusu Dube-Ncube said on Wednesday that the premier’s office and eThekwini Municipality would provide financial support for the musicians’ funeral.

The memorial service for the celebrity was held today at eThekwini Community Church (ECC), and his funeral will be place tomorrow, 30 December, at the Durban International Convention Centre.

While many praised the government’s benevolence, the radio host did not understand why. She posted on Twitter,

Why is the government paying for the burial of a citizen? A person who was not an official and who was not killed by an accident, a natural disaster, or anything else that would necessitate the expenditure of taxpayer funds?”

Ravele tagged the presidency’s Twitter account and requested “supporting legislation,” but they did not respond.

Ravele, according to Times Live, did not use Mampintsha’s name, but she did suggest that there were other ways to honor deceased creatives.

Not all Twitter users agreed with Ravele’s viewpoints on the subject. While some agreed with her, the majority stated that the government was not acting improperly and that Huli did not understand what she was tweeting about.
