South Sudan: business and entrepreneurship trainings for the youth

ITC is putting into action a number of business and entrepreneurship trainings for young people as part of its South Sudan Jobs Creation and Trade Development programme.

The goal of the project is to help young, local entrepreneurs working in the value chains for fruits and vegetables in specific areas of Central Equatoria and Western Equatoria States develop their business management and entrepreneurship skills.

The training sessions will last until August 2022. As of May, more than 240 young people working in the production and commerce of fruits and vegetables have attended trainings in the Central Equatoria State’s Juba Na Bari, Jebel Lado, Kator, and Kworijik as well as the Western Equatoria State’s Nzara and Yambio.

67 percent of the youth trained were young women producers and traders.

The young participants gained knowledge of the essentials of marketing, client relations, business management, and entrepreneurship abilities.

Among them is Diana Francis. At Yambio’s Masia market, a youthful vendor offers both fruits and vegetables for sale.

She was especially interested in learning more about the “5 Ps” of marketing: Product, Price, Promotion, People, and Place, particularly with regard to picking an advantageous place to advertise her goods.

She discovered that because many people have greater access to the merchants, it is ideal to set up shop close to the walkways that go through the market or by the intersections of roads.

Diana came to the realisation that selling her goods in a non-strategic area of the Masia market resulted in a poor client turnout and an inability to grow sales.

She is now making twice as much money thanks to her more wise location choice, earning between $30 and $38 a day as opposed to the previous USD 11 to $15.

“I have never attended such business training before which is so unique and practical. So, I have benefited from this training more than anything that could be given to me,” Diana says.
