South Korea’s Halloween crowd crushed dozens of victims, causing cardiac arrest

Saturday night, officials in Seoul, South Korea reported that dozens of people who flocked to the streets to celebrate Halloween suffered cardiac arrest after being crushed during a crowd surge.

According to the Associated Press, Choi Cheon-sik of the National Fire Agency claimed that at least 100 partygoers in the Itaewon neighborhood were hurt, and that about 50 were seeking treatment for cardiac arrest.

The AP claimed that hundreds of first responders arrived at the area to assist the victims. Officials told the outlet that a number of guests perished, although the exact number of casualties was not disclosed

Initial reports, according to The Independent, indicated that the increase occurred after rumors of a celebrity at a pub in the nightlife hotspot.

An online video depicts medics rushing to assist victims who have collapsed. According to the BBC, there were roughly 100,000 individuals in the vicinity, making it the first mass gathering since the COVID-19 epidemic where no masks were worn.

According to reports, President Yoon Suk-Yeol called for the care of the injured and an assessment of the festivities’ safety.
