At the FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome in 2009, Cameron van der Burgh takes home the bronze medal in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke event.

2007 – Jake White reveals the Springboks Rugby World Cup team that he will lead to the Webb Ellis trophy.

Frantz Kruger won the gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester with a throw of 66.39 metres.

1998 saw Mamelodi Sundowns defeat Leeds United 1-0 at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria as part of the United Bank Soccer Challenge.

On this day in 1998, the Proteas suffered a defeat to England in the fourth test at Trent Bridge.

Mike Atherton’s steadfast defiance in the face of Allan Donald’s fire would end up being a series turning point.

After tying in the fourth Test, England went on to win.

1974 – At Ellis Park, the British Lions and the Springboks played to a 13-13 draw. The series was won by the Lions 3-0.

Jonty Rhodes, a Proteas legend, is born in Pietermaritzburg in 1969. When Rhodes made his World Cup debut in 1992, he ran out Inzamam Ul Haq with a full-length dive that produced a picture-postcard moment.

1968 – The Springboks defeated the British Lions 19-6 at Ellis Park to win the series 3-0.

Ronnie Dawson’s team was defeated three times. The Lions defeated the Boks but won 15 of their 16 non-international games, only losing to Transvaal.

On this day in 1960, Jan Matsobane “Malombo” Lechaba is born in Pretoria. He played for Sport Clube Beira-Mar in Portugal for a while.

He also had stints with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.
