On June 8, 2022, South Africa commemorates the one-year anniversary of a wave of violent riots that erupted following the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma for contempt of court regarding a corruption inquiry.
The unrest initially spread throughout Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, the country’s most populous provinces responsible for half of its economic output.
Tragically, these riots claimed the lives of over 300 individuals.
Unrest Turns into an Attempted “Insurrection”
What began as protests against Zuma’s imprisonment quickly spiraled into the worst unrest experienced in South Africa since the end of apartheid.
President Cyril Ramaphosa referred to the events as an attempted “insurrection.”
