SIU to investigate corruption allegation Strategic Programmes and Project Management Office

The OR Tambo Municipality in the Eastern Cape has received allegations of corruption in the procurement of “strategic, technical and operational support services to the Strategic Programmes and Project Management Office,” and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is expected to look into these claims.

This came about when President Cyril Ramaphosa issued an executive order directing the corruption busting team to look into the claims.

“The Strategic Programmes and Project Management Office of the Municipality will be the focus of the SIU investigation into the municipality with regard to the procurement of or contracting for strategic, technical, and operational support services.

“[The] SIU will look into] payments that were made in relation thereto in a way that was not just, equitable, open, competitive, or economical; or contrary to applicable laws, circulars, or directives issued by the National Treasury or the appropriate Provincial Treasury.

The SIU said in a statement that it will look into “any unlawful, improper or irregular activity by employees, officials or agents of the Municipality; or by any other person or entity, in respect to the accusations being probed.”

The inquiry will cover a five-year period, according to the anti-corruption body.

“The proclamation applies to offences that occurred between October 1, 2017, and July 29, 2022, the day this proclamation was published.

The statement continued, “It also covers any offences that occurred before October 1, 2017, or after the date of publication of this Proclamation, that are pertinent to, related to, incidental to, or involve the same persons, entities, or contracts investigated under the authority of this Proclamation.
