Sho Madjozi recalls ‘MayaThePoet’

When South African singing icon Sho Madjozi released a video of herself as a child on Instagram, her admirers were astounded.

The tape is from her poetry session in 2016, when she was 24 years old and went by the moniker “Mayathepoet.” She uncovered the recollection in order to share it with her followers.

She captioned the video: “Performing at @poetryafrica exactly one month before to recording my debut single. This ought to be a song”

Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif, whose birth name is Sho Madjozi, was born in Shirley Village, Elim, Limpopo.

The movie depicts the vivacious performer participating at the 2016 “20th Poetry Africa” event, organized by the Centre for Creative Arts, a multi-disciplinary arts organization housed in the School of Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Madjozi, who was wearing a white T-shirt, tracksuit trousers, sneakers, and two fluffy pigtails, stated in the comments section that the sneakers in the video were the only pair she owned at the time.

The rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and poet, who is now one of South Africa’s most popular artists, mixes Tsonga culture into her songs and public image.

In June of 2019, Madjozi won the Newcomer of the Year and Best Female Album awards at the 25th South African Music Awards.

Additionally, she was nominated for best music video for “Huku” and best kwaito, gqom, and amapiano album for “Limpopo Champions League.”

Her greatest accomplishments include the global success of her music and meeting American wrestler John Cena on the Kelly Clarkson show in November 2019.
