Several trade unions stage a strike on Budget Day

Today, several trade unions will stage a strike on Budget Day, resulting in hundreds of thousands of workers, including teachers, Tube drivers, and doctors, hitting picket lines across the country.

The industrial action is due to ongoing disputes over pay, jobs, pensions, and conditions.

Tube strikes are expected to cause travel chaos in London, with workers being forced to drive or work from home as Underground stations are closed.

Despite talks between unions and the Westminster Government, little progress has been made in resolving the public sector strikes.

Members of several trade unions are taking part in the Budget Day walkouts, including civil servants, teachers, university lecturers, junior doctors, London Underground drivers, and BBC journalists.

The strikes will cause significant disruption, with schools and hundreds of sites being affected, and a knock-on effect likely on Thursday morning.

Last year, the number of days lost to strikes reached 2.47 million, the highest level since 1989.

Figures show that public sector pay growth was at 4.8% in those months, while private sector pay was up by 7%.

However, inflation has reduced the value of wages, making everyone feel poorer.

Yesterday, a senior health chief warned that the NHS cannot ‘go on like this’ and urged the Government to strike a deal with the unions as soon as possible.

Sir Julian Hartley, chief executive of NHS Providers, said the demand for care has not let up despite strikes, and the knock-on effects of a three-day strike would be felt for a long time to come.

Transport for London advised customers to check before they travel, and expect limited or no service on the Tube on Wednesday.

Members of the National Union of Journalists working at BBC Local across England will stage a 24-hour strike in a row over programme cuts.

Junior doctors in the British Medical Association will continue with a three-day stoppage they launched on Monday over pay.
