In an unusual move, the Nigerian Senate has decided to commence the screening process for President Bola Tinubu’s 28 ministerial nominees on Monday, July 31.
This decision comes despite the fact that the Senate typically does not conduct business on Mondays.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, explained this departure from the norm during a post-plenary session interview with journalists.
Thorough Screening Process for All Nominees
Senator Adaramodu emphasized that the screening process would be rigorous for each nominee.
Recognizing the significance of this national assignment, the Senate has suspended all its rules to prioritize the exercise starting on Monday.
To accommodate the extensive screening process, the Senate has also delayed its annual long recess, which was originally scheduled to begin on Thursday.
No Automatic “Bow and Go” Procedure
In the past, the Senate has applied the “bow and go” procedure, allowing certain nominees to receive swift approval without intensive questioning.
However, Senator Adaramodu clarified that this time, the traditional procedure will not be automatically applied to any nominee.
Instead, all nominees will undergo thorough scrutiny to assess their character, personality, and abilities.
The Senate is committed to ensuring that each nominee is qualified and suitable for their proposed ministerial position.
Commitment to Transparency and Fairness
Senator Adaramodu assured the Nigerian public that the 10th Senate would uphold its responsibility with integrity and transparency throughout the screening process.
emphasized that they would not fabricate questions or allegations against the nominees but would instead rely on thorough examination and evaluation of their credentials.
Petitions and Concerns Encouraged
To enhance the screening process, Senator Adaramodu encouraged citizens with relevant information, concerns, or petitions regarding any of the nominees to submit these to the appropriate Senate committees.
This approach ensures that any pertinent issues are duly investigated and taken into consideration during the evaluation of the candidates.
Addressing Fraud Allegations
In response to allegations of fraud against some of the nominees, Senator Adaramodu clarified that all the nominees had already undergone security screenings by the executive branch.
However, he assured the public that if any red flags were raised during the Senate’s scrutiny, they would conduct further investigations to address the concerns appropriately.
