Sea Point Promenade bike ban is ‘off the table,’ says City of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town, said Tuesday, 3 May, that the majority of the comments received about the recreational use of the Promenade were in favour of cycling continuing.

Between 10 March and 10 April – the City received 1953 comments from residents and interested parties on the matter.

“Although the majority of the respondents supports cycling on the promenade, many have raised concerns about pedestrian safety and the potential danger and risk posed by cyclists.

“Given the preliminary outcome, I want to confirm the proposal to ban cyclists from the promenade is off the table,” said Rob Quintas, the MayCo member for Urban Mobility.

Quintas said the next step for the City of Cape Town is to investigate interventions that would improve the safety of Sea Point strollers.

This will take place in the coming months. The public’s comments, proposals and the findings of the City’s investigations will be compiled in a report that will pave the way forward.

The report is expected to be completed “by mid-year” after which it will be put before the Portfolio Committee on Urban Mobility and Subcouncil 16 for consideration.

“It is very important that residents participate and comment on ideas and proposals that have an impact on their lives and living experiences,” said Quintas.
