In Cape Town, for the very first time, the tenth annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards will offer the Savanna Newcomer Showcase.
It is the first of a series of events leading up to the Awards Ceremony in April and has become a fixture on the annual comedy calendar.
The showcase was established years ago as a venue for twenty up-and-coming comedians to each do a five-minute set, allowing attendees to determine who to vote for in the up-and-coming category for upcoming awards.
It has developed and become an event attended by some of the top comedians, ad agencies, casting agents, and talent scouts in the country.
Haydn Henning, Marketing Manager at LIFT, stated, “Not only are we flying all the shortlisted newcomers from across the country to Cape Town to perform, but we’re also inviting the nine previous winners of the Savanna Newcomer Category to join us in the mother city.”
The brand manager for Savanna Cider, Kayla Hendricks, adds that this event’s roster is one to remember. We are extremely happy and excited to see a new generation of comic greats in our country. This event gives us all a true chance to be “in the know” about who’s on the rise in the world of comedy, prior to the major awards where we will all come together to honor the names we all know and love. We look forward to providing a great celebration of emerging talent that is committed to making us laugh out loud.”
Schalk Bezuidenhout, who won the Savanna Newcomer Award in 2013, will also compete for the Comedian of the Year Award this year.
The nominees will be unveiled at a press event in March, and the awards ceremony will take place in Johannesburg on 15 April.
The Savanna Newcomer Showcase takes place at Cape Town’s Star Theatre at The Homecoming Centre on Friday, 17 February 2023.
