Sainsbury’s gates won’t open without a scanned receipt

Because some retailers ask customers to scan their receipts before leaving the store, Sainsbury’s customers have been left feeling “insulted” and “like prisoners.”

Several of the grocery chain’s self-checkouts now feature barriers that demand consumers use receipt scanners to provide proof of purchase before they may exit the establishment.

The gates won’t open and customers won’t be allowed to exit the store without displaying a receipt.

Customers have expressed their displeasure with the store, with one calling it “a farce of a mega market” and another claiming they feel “insulted.”

Several of the grocery chain’s self-checkouts now feature barriers that demand consumers use receipt scanners to provide proof of purchase before they may exit the establishment.

One customer tweeted the following in reference to Sainsburys: “How dare you humiliate me by scanning receipts to leave.”

“Goodbye, you distrustful retailer.”

One person complained on Twitter that “they are essentially keeping (people) captive against their will.”

Twitter user writes: “Scan your receipt to leave Sainsbury’s…” One step closer to control and a cashless world.

I won’t be scanning a receipt to exit the shop, another client said. If you do, I’ll sue you for false imprisonment.

However, similar rules have been implemented by other merchants for their clients. In its shops in Sheffield and Northampton, Primark started testing self-service checkouts with barriers that open after scanning proof of purchase.

The Derbyshire Live reports that Primark declared the testing to be “good” and that they would be bringing the checkout to other locations.

‘This is not a new security precaution and appears in a limited number of our shops in the self-service checkout sections,’ a Sainsburys representative said.
