Russian soldier hiding in Ukraine arrested after 6 months

On Monday, a Russian soldier was arrested in Ukraine after hiding for six months in a region that has been heavily shelled by Moscow’s forces, according to police.

The man was discovered by members of a special purpose police battalion while they were patrolling the village of Kupiansk-Vuzloviy. The soldier, who is from the Moscow region and remains unnamed, had allegedly been hiding in abandoned buildings in the Kupiansk area near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Police have revealed that he is a serviceman of the 27th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Federation. The soldier was dressed in civilian clothing when he was arrested and has been taken to the local police department for questioning.

Kupiansk, which is home to a key railway hub, has been the site of intense fighting in recent weeks, with less than five miles between it and Russian positions.

Despite this, around 2,500 residents are still living in the area, with some refusing to leave their homes despite being ordered to do so by Ukrainian authorities who cited the constant artillery attacks as making normal life impossible.

Last week, the most vulnerable residents, including children and people with disabilities, were ordered to evacuate. However, some locals are still refusing to leave their homes.

On Tuesday, another round of shelling killed a woman driving a car in the town of Vovchansk and damaged several buildings, according to local authorities.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Ukrainian regional military administration, stated that enemy forces are relentlessly trying to attack the positions of Ukrainian forces, which is why mandatory evacuations have been announced.
