Russian casualties in Ukraine now exceed WW2, says think tank

The total number of Russian deaths in Ukraine may have surpassed all fatalities in 16 of Russia’s military actions since World War II, according to reports.

The Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) claims that soldiers were being killed at a rate 25 times higher than in Chechnya and 35 times higher than in the Soviet Union’s ten-year war in Afghanistan during the first year of the war.

It is believed that Russian troops are dying at five times the rate of Ukrainians, with a total of around 70,000 deaths. Reports indicate that Russian teenage boys now have the same life expectancy as those in Haiti.

More reports of mutinies among Russian forces in eastern Ukraine have emerged, as soldiers are reportedly furious about the tactics of their commanders. In one instance, soldiers were ordered at gunpoint to charge across open ground, which they refused to do.

At least six Ukrainian civilians were killed, and several more were wounded as Russia launched 81 air strikes yesterday, temporarily cutting power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

Ukraine has dismissed claims made by the Kremlin that it tried to murder officials in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region, with the pro-Russian enclave alleging that Ukrainian agents intended to detonate a car bomb.

Pro-Western Moldovan president Maia Sandu had accused Moscow of plotting to overthrow her last month.
