Royal family, U.K., and globe mourn Queen Elizabeth II

People in Britain and around the world are grieving the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom and one of the world’s most lasting royal figures. Thursday, she passed away at the age of 96. Buckingham Palace acknowledged the queen’s passing at Balmoral Castle, her official Scottish holiday residence.

Doctors for the queen revealed Thursday morning that they had placed her under medical monitoring out of “concern” for her health. Queen Elizabeth had been reducing her public appearances for several months, citing “mobility difficulties” and general discomfort as the reason for many cancellations.

Elizabeth’s four children flew to Balmoral to be by her side: Charles, her eldest son and the new monarch, along with his sister Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and her youngest son Prince Edward. The next successor to the throne, Prince William, the eldest son of Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince Harry, were also present.

The next ten days will see the United Kingdom undergo a finely planned process of grief and constitutional transformation.
