Roman Catholic Church reinstates handshakes at mass

Saturday’s news indicated that the Catholic Church had reinstated handshakes at mass.

A letter from the Italian Bishops’ Conference conveyed the church’s continuous relaxation of pandemic-era regulations, which was reported by RAI and other Italian news outlets.

In a website-published letter to bishops, the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) stated, “It will be feasible to reinstate the customary method of exchanging the sign of peace.”

In the Catholic mass, handshakes often occur with the “sign of peace,” which occurs after the Lord’s prayer and before Holy Communion.

During the epidemic, the greeting was forbidden; the CEI partially reinstated it last year, but only through eye contact or a head bow.
