Roger Federer eyes Rafael Nadal pairing

London — Roger Federer stated on Wednesday that he intends to link up with Rafael Nadal for his final professional encounter at the Laver Cup in London.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion revealed last week that he would retire after the tournament at the 02 venue in London, which begins on Friday.

Federer’s last competitive match was a loss to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon last year. Federer has been battling a knee issue.

He will play doubles on Friday evening in London, but will not play a singles match.

The Swiss does not yet know if he would be able to partner up with Nadal, but he acknowledged that it would be his ideal situation.

He addressed a crowded press conference, “Of course, without a doubt.” “I believe that would be an extremely rare occurrence if it were to occur.

“As long as we competed together, there was always this mutual respect – our families and coaching staffs always got along great.

“For us to have gone through the careers we’ve both had, come out the other side, and be able to have a pleasant relationship, I believe is a tremendous message to not only tennis and sports, but perhaps to the world at large.”

“Therefore, that would be wonderful. I don’t know if it will occur, but it would be a great moment if it did.”

Nadal, who holds the record for most Grand Slam victories with 22, Djokovic, who has won 21, and Murray, who has won Wimbledon twice, are all members of Team Europe.

Team World consists of Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Diego Schwartzman.

Federer stated that he was pleased to retire at age 41, but acknowledged that it was a “bittersweet decision.”

He stated, “You always want to play forever.” “I enjoy being on the court, competing against the boys, and traveling… I adore my career in every way.”
