Richard Sharp Resigns as BBC Chairman Over Breach of Public Appointments Rules

…By Larry John for TDPel Media.

Richard Sharp has resigned from his position as the chairman of the BBC after an official report found he breached the rules for public appointments.

The report, conducted by Adam Heppinstall KC, found that Sharp had “failed to disclose potential perceived conflicts of interest.”

This report was ordered after it was discovered that Sharp had played a role in facilitating an £800,000 loan guarantee for then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson before being recommended for the influential role overseeing the public broadcaster’s independence.

Sharp’s Response and Resignation

Sharp stated that he believes the breach was inadvertent and not material, and that the facts Heppinstall laid out substantiate his claim.

He also mentioned that the Secretary of State consulted with the BBC Board, who supported his view.

However, he said that he has decided to prioritize the interests of the BBC and feels that the matter may distract from the Corporation’s good work if he remains in his post until the end of his term.

He has therefore resigned as BBC Chair to the Secretary of State and to the Board.

BBC Board Response and Government Appointment

The BBC Board stated that it accepts Sharp’s resignation and called him a valued and respected colleague and a very effective chairman of the BBC.

The Board believes that Richard Sharp is a person of integrity and has always had the impartiality of the BBC and a desire to see the organization thrive at the forefront of his work as chairman.

The UK Government is moving swiftly to begin the process of appointing a new chairman of the BBC, in line with the terms of the BBC’s Charter.
