Richard Sharp has resigned from his position as the chairman of the BBC after an official report found he breached the rules for public appointments.
The report, conducted by Adam Heppinstall KC, found that Sharp had “failed to disclose potential perceived conflicts of interest.”
This report was ordered after it was discovered that Sharp had played a role in facilitating an £800,000 loan guarantee for then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson before being recommended for the influential role overseeing the public broadcaster’s independence.
Sharp’s Response and Resignation
Sharp stated that he believes the breach was inadvertent and not material, and that the facts Heppinstall laid out substantiate his claim.
He also mentioned that the Secretary of State consulted with the BBC Board, who supported his view.
