In recent months, some repentant Boko Haram insurgents who have integrated into society have voiced their dissatisfaction with their living conditions.
Over the past two years, more than 1,000 Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered to the Nigerian military following the destruction of their camps in the North East.
However, these individuals are now raising concerns about the quality of food provided to them and the lack of security during their rehabilitation.
Living Conditions: Food Quality and Welfare Support
Bukar Mala, a former terrorist commander, expressed his disappointment with the quality of food offered to the repentant insurgents.
He compared it unfavorably to the provisions he received during his time at the barracks, stating that it has become increasingly challenging for them to consume the meals provided.
Mala appealed to the government to prioritize their welfare and consider providing them with the necessary capital to establish their own businesses, thereby improving their overall living conditions.
Security Concerns: Threats to Personal Safety
Another repentant terrorist, Umar Bashir, revealed that the former insurgents lack proper security measures in their camp during the radicalization program.
He highlighted the dangers they face, including threats to their lives from active combatants in the bush.
Bashir claimed that there are plans to assassinate him due to accusations that his leadership resulted in the surrender of numerous individuals and a decline in their group’s power.
Urgently appealing to the government, he requested protection and security measures to ensure his safety and prevent him from returning to terrorist activities after rehabilitation.

Ahmed Shehu, Chairman of the North East Civil Society, emphasized the significance of monitoring and evaluating the process of rehabilitating repentant insurgents.
He stated that he has been engaged in the process, listening to them before their release.
Shehu highlighted the need for a comprehensive framework that includes aggressive engagement, monitoring, and evaluation, particularly considering the increasing number of repentant insurgents.
