President Cyril Ramaphosa has addressed critics who, in response to his recent State of the Nation Address (Sona), have sought to undermine the achievements of South Africa’s democracy.
He contends that these critics aim to preserve racial privilege and roll back the ongoing social and economic transformations in the country.
Dismissing Critics on Progress Metrics
Ramaphosa dismisses the critics by pointing out tangible improvements, such as 9 out of 10 households now residing in formal dwellings, increased access to clean drinking water and electricity, higher educational achievements among South African adults, and improved educational outcomes for learners from disadvantaged communities.
Highlighting Economic Achievements
Ramaphosa underscores the success of economic initiatives, noting a significant increase in international tourist arrivals and the country’s efforts to attract investment.
He highlights the success of five Investment Conferences, resulting in over R1.5 trillion in commitments from investors over the past five years.
The president emphasizes the link between investment and the creation of employment opportunities and new businesses.
Controversy Over Military Deployment
Following the Sona, President Ramaphosa authorized the deployment of 2,900 SANDF members to combat illegal armed groups in the eastern DRC.
In response, EFF leader Julius Malema criticized the decision, calling it “out of order” and advocating for an immediate halt to peacekeeping operations, expressing doubts about the troops’ suitability for the mission.
