President Joe Biden meets with China’s President Xi Jinping

In the midst of simmering tensions, President Joe Biden will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping for the fifth time on Thursday morning at 8:30.

A readout of the call will be available later from the White House.

Call comes as U.S. military leaders warn of the growing threat from China and reports surface that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in March of this year, Biden and Xi last communicated.

As its enormous neighbour China protests the possibility of Speaker Pelosi visiting the island, Taiwan has stepped up its biggest military exercises ever.

Beijing has recently made increasing warnings about the consequences should Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan proceed, which has increased tensions.

Should the visit proceed, Taiwan would have to “bear the wrath of Beijing,” according to The South China Morning Post.

During Pelosi’s visit, Beijing is likely to increase military pressure on the island.

According to Chieh Chung, a senior researcher at the National Policy Foundation think tank, “possible action includes sending multiple warplanes across the median line that separates the Taiwan Strait,” noting that this occurred when former US undersecretary of state Keith Krach visited Taiwan in 2020.

Pelosi refused to comment on her movements for security reasons when asked about the upcoming trip and whether she intends to make it on Wednesday.

Hakeem Jeffries, a Democratic congressman, emphasised this point once more on Wednesday.

He informed the media, “The Speaker does not comment on her travel plans for a variety of reasons, including security, and I will not.”
