Pope Francis sends the Vatican’s second-highest-ranking official to Africa in his place

Pope Francis has chosen to send the Vatican’s second-highest official in his stead after regretfully canceling his own planned trip to Africa in July.

His Holiness Pope Francis has decided to send the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to Kinshasa and Juba in order to demonstrate his closeness to the beloved peoples of the Congo and South Sudan after his Apostolic Journey to those countries was postponed, the Holy See’s press office said on Monday.

The period of Parolin’s visit is July 1–8.

Pope Francis’ July trip will be postponed due to health concerns, particularly with his knee, the Vatican first revealed on June 10.

The pontiff expressed regret for having to cancel his trip due to knee pain the following Sunday and promised to reschedule it “as soon as possible.”

He has either used a wheelchair or a cane in his recent public appearances this month.
