In an effort to combat the increasing circulation of unlicensed firearms in society, the police in Gauteng have confiscated over 3,000 firearms and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition since the beginning of the year.

This is the consequence of the province-wide Operation O Kae Molao program, which includes routine crime-prevention patrols, roadblocks, and stop-and-searches.

Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, provincial commissioner of police in Gauteng, praised the police for a job well done and urged the community to continue offering tips that lead to crime prevention.

Mawela stated, “Firearms are the weapon of choice in the majority of crimes committed in Gauteng, and it is crucial that they be removed from the wrong hands in order to protect innocent victims.”

The confiscated firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they have any connection to other significant crimes committed across the nation.
