Paul McKenna’s Radio Comeback After 33 Years

Paul McKenna, the renowned hypnotherapist and best-selling author, is set to make a return to radio after a hiatus of 33 years since leaving Radio 1.

From DJ to Hypnotherapist and Author

Paul McKenna initially gained fame as a DJ on Capital FM during the 1980s. However, he later transitioned to become a highly successful hypnotherapist, amassing over 12 million book sales.

One-Off Show on Boom Radio

McKenna is making his radio comeback with a one-off show on Boom Radio scheduled for this Saturday. During the show, he will play songs spanning from the 1960s and share stories from his career.

Excitement for the Radio Return

Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming show, Paul McKenna stated, “I’m very excited about doing this special show on Boom. My love of radio has never gone away. I can’t wait to share some of my favorite tracks with listeners and maybe tell a few stories from my radio days along the way.”

DJing Career and Journey in Radio

McKenna’s journey in radio began in Topshop on Oxford Street, where he won a competition to present a ‘young DJ slot’ on Capital Radio in London. At the age of 20, he joined Radio Caroline, a pirate radio station, in 1983, before moving to Chiltern Radio. His reputation on the airwaves led to a return to Capital Radio in 1988, followed by a stint at Radio 1, where he remained for four years.

Transition to Hypnotherapy and Theatrical Success

As his interest in hypnotherapy grew, Paul McKenna’s hypnotherapist shows began to fill theaters, and he garnered attention from television production companies. These developments led to his decision to depart from Radio 1 in 1992.

Love for Radio Reignited on Boom Radio

Despite his diverse career, Paul’s passion for radio never diminished. This passion prompted his return to the airwaves on Boom Radio, a national DAB radio station catering to Baby Boomers.

Recognition from Boom Radio

David Lloyd, Boom Radio’s program director, expressed his delight at having Paul McKenna back on the radio, highlighting McKenna’s enduring love for the medium.

Boom Radio’s Success and Veteran Presenters

Boom Radio, founded by David and Phil Riley, veterans of the British radio industry, has been steadily gaining listenership. The station caters to those who grew up with music from the 1960s and 1970s, a demographic aged over 50. It has recently doubled its listening figures, indicating its appeal to fans of nostalgic music.

Notable Return of Other Presenters

Paul McKenna is not the only veteran presenter returning to the airwaves on Boom Radio. Last month, legendary DJ Simon Bates, aged 76, joined the station to host a weekly show.

Boom Radio, established on Valentine’s Day 2021, addresses a market niche for a new music radio station aimed at Radio 2 listeners.
