Parliament hails Eskom board

The introduction of the new 13-member Eskom Board has been greeted favorably by Khaya Magaxa, head of the Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises.

Pravin Gordhan, minister of public enterprises, announced the newly formed board on Friday.

The appointments take place in the midst of the parastatal’s most recent three-week load shedding period.

Dr. Busisiwe Vilakazi, Mteto Nyati, Lwazi Gogwana, Dr. Tshakani Mthombeni, Leslie Mkhabela, Fathima Gany, Ayanda Mofaleka, Claudelle von Eck, Tryphosa Romano, Bheki Ntshalintshali, and Clive le Roux make up the board in addition to Mpho Makwana, who serves as chair.

Magaxa said in a statement that the committee anticipated the new board would, among other things, “increase the operational capacity and enhance the performance of the power utility.” The new board boasts abilities and deep expertise from the domains of engineering, accounting, and energy policy.

He said that the board’s arrival coincides with the power company’s search for fresh ideas and creativity.

“One of the objectives we have as the committee is that the new board should be thinking about innovative methods to improve the energy that Eskom is making accessible by addressing the operation of power plants that are suffering a rise in failures, resulting in blackouts,” said Magaxa.

At the Koeberg nuclear power plant, he urged the board to help by promoting the restoration of cordial working relationships between management and organized labor.

Magaxa pleaded with the audience to bring together these crucial Koeberg actors so that the nuclear power plant could continue to fulfill its mandate of supplying electricity.
