Over 100 million Americans are under excessive heat warning or heat advisory

According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory or warning is in effect for more than 100 million Americans on Thursday.

Many states, including New York, experienced triple-digit temperatures; hence, some residents sought relief in cooling facilities like the Brooklyn Public Library.

“I don’t have no AC in my apartment, so I came here to cool off. It’s too hot. I would have to wait for the sun to go down to go home,” Brooklyn resident Clyde Taylor said.

The emergency management division of New York City is in charge of 550 cooling centers. The heat advisory for New York City has been extended through Sunday, and utilities are running at maximum capacity.

Customers of Con Edison, one of New York City’s energy providers, have been requested to turn down their air conditioners by only a few degrees in order to ensure that everyone has access to electricity.
