A former member of the Metropolitan Police in London has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for committing many sex offences over the course of 18 years.

David Carrick was identified as one of the most serial sex offenders in the country’s history after pleading guilty to 49 crimes, including 24 counts of rape, for a total of 85 offenses.

Carrick, who joined the police in 2001 after serving in the British Army, was given 36 life terms on Monday at the Southwark Crown Court in London.

According to Sky News, the 48-year-old sat in the dock with his eyes closed and his head bowed, displaying no expression.

A court stated that between 2003 and 2020, Carrick operated as if he was “untouchable,” using his position of authority to take “monstrous advantage of women.”

The Attorney General’s Office stated that it had received “multiple requests” to reconsider Carrick’s prison sentence, with many arguing that it was too “lenient” given the crimes committed.

“We can confirm that we have received multiple requests concerning David Carrick’s sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme,” a representative stated.

Carrick was only suspended in October 2021, after a second rape charge was filed against him. According to the police department, Carrick was investigated for complaints lodged against him in 2001 and 2017, but no charges were ever filed.

“David Carrick’s crimes were beyond description. Mark Rowley, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said in a statement that the specifics of the incident were “harrowing.”

“He subjected these victims and survivors to the most degrading and inhumane treatment; nevertheless, they had the courage to come forward and provide the evidence that led to his conviction.”

“He abused his position as a police officer in the most reprehensible manner. He should not have been a police officer,” added Rowley, adding that the force’s approach was not “rigorous enough.”

“I would want to apologize again on behalf of the Met. We sincerely apologize,” Rowley added.

The court heard that Carrick met his victims using dating apps and gained their trust by posing as a police officer.

He admitted to having repeatedly raped some of the women over the years.

Several victims courageously testified in court that Carrick would confine them in a closet beneath the stairs in his home for hours without sustenance. Some of the women were compelled to clean his home in their underwear.

Some of Carrick’s victims were subjected to physical and verbal abuse, including being belt-whipped and urinated on by Carrick. He also exerted financial control over some of them and, in other circumstances, ensured that the ladies severed all communication with other men and their children.

Carrick was heard calling his victims “slaves,” “fat,” and “lazy” and telling them when to eat and sleep.

Peter Burt of the Crown Prosecution Service stated that the criminal justice system failed sexual assault victims.

Burt stated in a statement, “We are aware that there are victims of other rapes and serious sexual offenses out there, and that many of you may be concerned about being believed or receiving justice in the future.”

“We hope that seeing Carrick, a serial abuser, manipulator, and rapist, behind bars will encourage other women to come forward, knowing that we will do everything possible to bring the perpetrator to justice.”
