Nuclear Waste Services has awarded a four-year framework contract worth up to £41 million to three suppliers for the treatment and conditioning of radioactive waste

The new service has been hailed as providing producers of radioactive waste with added value because it will give them access to a variety of other technologies, such as encapsulation and de-tritiation, in addition to the core processes of incineration and super compaction that are regularly used to dispose of waste streams.

The Framework has been given to Veolia ES UK Ltd., PermaFix Environmental Services Inc., and Inutec Ltd., doing business as Tradebe Inutec.

NWS Director of Waste Services, Dr. Craig Ashton, stated:

This Framework represents the on-going development of our customer service offerings as part of a longer-term plan to create even more value and facilitate mission acceleration.

As always, the crew did a tremendous job getting everything ready to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

The agreement expands on the success of a Garbage Treatment Services Framework that has been in place for four years, and it keeps as much of the emphasis on providing treatment technologies that allow waste to be diverted away from the Repository as is practical.

The Framework can offer services that span the whole waste lifetime, such as project management, expert assistance, characterization, site preparations, disassembly, transport, segregation, treatment, conditioning, and optimized disposal, among others.
