North Somerset Council criticized for Weston-super-Mare street sign misspellings

A local council has been deemed incompetent when constituents discovered many misspelled street signs in a single neighborhood.

At least five different signs leading to four streets in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, have misspelled words.

Some locals are able to see the humorous side of the error, while others view it as an example of “typical council incompetence.”

Becket Road, which is also spelled as Beckett Road on a sign across the street, and Queen’s Way, which is spelled three different ways in close proximity to each other, are among the most egregious errors.

Austen Drive is spelled both with and without an E just a few hundred yards apart, whereas Ryecroft Avenue is spelled both with and without an E in a different section of town.

North Somerset Council acknowledged the issue on Becket Road and that it was examining the other signage.

According to locals, the errors have caused issues and can make giving directions difficult.

One local, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “I spotted the Becket/Beckett signage years ago, as I turn into the area daily.

‘It was difficult to miss since they were directly opposite one another.

A friend informed me that Queensway, off of which Becket Road is located, also displayed as Queen’s Way on my Facebook profile, so I went and took a look.

The resident discovered upon closer inspection that there were not two but three variations of the street name, the third being Queens Way.

I began paying closer attention to signs and observed an increase in errors.

Many find it hilarious and typical of our council, while others find it to be utter incompetence and fail to see the humor.

Another Weston homeowner stated online, “One word describes the council: unprintable!”

A third added, “Someone had a few too many when this was completed!”

The North Somerset Council has confirmed the misspelling on Becket Road and stated that it is “being corrected.”

A spokeswoman stated, “We are examining the correct spellings, and if any signs need to be changed, we will notify our contractors.”

Residents are always appreciated for reporting issues so that we can address them as appropriate.
