No one should spend the Christmas behind bars. Meek Mill releases 20 women from prison in Philadelphia

During the holiday season, Meek Mill became a personal Christmas miracle for twenty families by paying the bail of nearly two dozen women detained in a Philadelphia-area correctional facility.

The 35-year-old rapper from Philadelphia paid the bail of twenty jailed women who otherwise could not have afforded to return home for the holidays.

Mill, whose given name is Robert Williams, stated, “Being away from my son during the holidays when I was incarcerated was horrible.”

Several of the women were released on Christmas Eve, with some being reunited with their children and other loved ones in emotional pre-holiday gatherings.

Mill was convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a loaded handgun by a convicted felon in the second degree in 2008.

A Philadelphia County Superior Court sentenced him to eleven to twenty-three months in prison and eight years of probation. Early in 2009, he was released after serving seven months under a five-year probation arrangement.

In 2017, he was again condemned to prison for violating his parole. Five months were served in a Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution.

Mill, along with other notable figures such as Jay-Z and Robert Kraft, founded the REFORM Alliance, an organization whose mission is to “change probation and parole by reforming laws, processes, and culture to create meaningful pathways to work and wellbeing”

The organization has thus far passed sixteen measures in ten states in an effort to promote “stable communities, stronger families, and enhanced public safety for everybody.”

On Saturday morning, Mill shared on his Instagram story a post from REFORM depicting one of the women being held by a loved one following her realeading.

Mill stated, “They got me locked up far away from my familyyyyyyyyy.” ‘Blessings.’

According to a press statement from the group, Mill also provided each woman with a gift card to purchase groceries or gifts.

Mill founded the REFORM Alliance after being incarcerated twice and having numerous additional run-ins with the law. The organization strives to reform probation and parole regulations in the United States.

More than 50 children whose lives have been affected by the criminal justice system were treated to a variety of special activities as part of REFORM’s annual Season of Giving.

Others socialized with Mill and Philadelphia Eagles’ Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, and Dallas Goedert, among others. Others were taken to a 76ers game and given VIP suite box tickets while wearing their new Philadelphia apparel.

Mill has also spent the past year pushing for the elimination of the use of lyrics in criminal prosecutions.

A letter signed by Mills and several of his music industry peers stated that prosecutors have argued that ‘lyrics should be interpreted literally – in the words of one prosecutor, ‘autobiographical journals’ – despite the fact that the genre is rooted in a long tradition of storytelling that prioritized figurative language and is ‘drenched in hyperbole.’

The letter continues, “This strategy effectively denies rap music the stature of art and provides prosecutors a grave edge in court.” “By presenting rap lyrics as rhymed admissions of illicit action, they are frequently able to gain convictions even in the absence of additional evidence.”
