No injuries were reported after a campus building at UNISA caught fire

On Wednesday morning, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela building on the UNISA Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria was reported to have caught fire.

Professor Puleng LenkaBula, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, acknowledged in a statement that a piece of the building was injured by the fire and that no injuries were recorded.

“In accordance with customary procedure, the team notified both the City of Tshwane Fire Department and the South African Police Services” (SAPS). The cause of the fire and the amount of the damage will be investigated as part of the proceedings. The investigation findings will serve as a roadmap for management’s next moves, according to the statement.

“Management has decided that the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela building would not be accessible throughout the investigation due to health and safety concerns. The affected personnel would be notified via line function communication.”

LenkaBula commended the protective services and facilities for their prompt responses, as well as the campus members who offered assistance throughout the crisis.

She stated, “Management would like to express its appreciation to the Protection Services and Facilities Management staff, as well as other Unisans who responded to the call to action this morning.”

According to reports, the identical section of the structure caught fire earlier this year but was extinguished by workers.
