On Tuesday, the President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced a two-day recess for lawmakers, allowing them to actively engage in campaigns for bye-elections scheduled for February 3 in specific states.
This short holiday aligns with the Senate Standing Rule, designating Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for official plenary sessions.
Following a break of approximately 30 days for the Christmas period, members of the upper chamber resumed today.
Plenary Session Highlights
The plenary today commenced at approximately 11:25 am and spanned about five hours, encompassing a two-hour closed-door session from 12:20 pm to 2:25 pm.
During this session, President Akpabio extended a warm welcome to his colleagues, underscoring the significance of delivering good governance. He urged fellow senators to collaborate with President Bola Tinubu to achieve this shared goal.
Adjournment for Bye-Elections Campaigns
President Akpabio informed lawmakers that the next plenary session is scheduled for Tuesday, February 6, emphasizing that senators would actively participate in the campaign for the bye-elections in their respective constituencies.
The decision to adjourn stems from the upcoming elections in approximately 36 constituencies across the country, set for Saturday.
Both the House of Representatives and the Senate reached a consensus to allow members less than 48 hours for campaign activities, concluding by midnight on Thursday.
“In view of the elections in about 36 constituencies in the country, coming up on Saturday, both the House of Representatives and the distinguished chamber of the Senate, we have agreed that we have less than 48 hours to partake in the campaigns which will close on Thursday by midnight.
And therefore, this Senate stands adjourned to the 6th day of February 2024 at 11 a.m. prompt,” remarked President Akpabio, concluding the plenary session.
