New York’s Adult Survivors Act goes into effect as scores of adults report sexual assault

Less than two dozen lawsuits have been filed statewide under a new statute that opened a legal window for victims of sexual assault whose cases would otherwise be too old to be brought to court.

The Adult Survivors Act, which went into effect on November 24th, has only had 19 complaints filed, representing around 42 victims.

Half of these charges have been filed in Manhattan, where accusers have come out against celebrities like as Bill Cosby, Leon Black, and Donald Trump, while Queens and Brooklyn have each filed one complaint.

The Adult Survivors Act is comparable to the Child Victims Act of 2019, which resulted in the filing of almost 5,000 lawsuits in two years on behalf of child sex abuse victims.
