“New Pay Offer Expected for NHS Unions: Announcement This Afternoon”

According to Sky News, NHS unions have received a new pay offer, and an announcement is expected later today.

The progress in talks with the unions representing nurses and ambulance staff has led to this development.

Last month, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) agreed to suspend industrial action and engage in “intensive” negotiations with ministers.

Following this, other health unions, including Unison and the GMB, halted strike action by ambulance workers this month.

These unions have been promised additional investment for pay rises outside of the current budgets.

The Department of Health and Social Care recently informed the NHS pay review body that a maximum pay rise of 3.5% for 2023-2024 would be affordable.

The government has also proposed a 3.5% pay rise for police, teachers, and judges.

Initially, the RCN demanded an above-inflation pay rise of 19.2% as nurses stated that they have suffered a real-terms pay cut of 20% since 2010.

However, the RCN leader, Pat Cullen, was willing to meet the government halfway at around 10%.

The RCN went on strike for the first time in over 100 years just before Christmas, followed by further strikes in January and February.

However, in England, the strikes were suspended, and a similar postponement occurred in Wales.

Meanwhile, teachers in Scotland have been awarded a pay offer that equates to a 14.6% increase over 28 months.

The Scottish government has called it the “largest pay package in over 20 years.”
