Thursday, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) will announce how much Eskom can increase electricity rates in 2023.

In November 2022, Eskom presented its sixth multi-year determination revenue application to the regulator, proposing a 32% increase in tariffs.

Nersa was anticipated to make a judgment in November, but the announcement has been delayed until December. According to media accounts, at the time Nersa stated that the figures did not match up and sought additional time to evaluate them.

“The National Energy Regulator of South Africa announced today that the Gauteng division of the high court of South Africa has granted the energy regulator an extension to make a final decision on Eskom’s revenue application for the 2023/24 financial year by no later than January 12, 2023,” the regulator said at the time.

“On July 5, 2022, the high court ordered Nersa to make a final determination on Eskom’s income application for the 2023/24 fiscal year by no later than December 24, 2022. The term has now been extended to January 12, 2023.”

Wednesday, Nersa confirmed that the issue will be discussed at its upcoming meeting. If the increase is approved, cash-strapped consumers would face further pressure to pay their electric bills.

Wednesday, Eskom intensified rolling blackouts to stage six, citing significant capacity shortages.
