During a heated confrontation, a Montana hotel employee appeared to ridicule a Native American woman’s accent, which went viral on TikTok.

On February 9, Jaylynn Mitchell, a hotel guest at the Great Falls Inn in Butte, Montana, was recording an argument she was having with the hotel’s maid, Kathryn Carrette, over the checkout times for her disabled relative.

“I’m going to upload this on TikTok. Carrette allegedly mocked Mitchell’s indigenous dialect and stated, “I’m going to post this on TikTok,” reiterating a threat she had made off camera.

According to KRTV, the hotel’s general manager, Kelli LaFountain, called the police on Mitchell and her family after Mitchell criticized Carrette for using a condescending tone of voice and stated, “see how she’s mocking our accent.”

Mitchell, a member of the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation, was staying at the hotel with her family, including her paraplegic uncle, for whom the family had requested disability rooms in advance.

I wonder why this “property” has only two stars! This morning, these women shamelessly disregarded our entire family! My uncle is a paraplegic, yet he is permitted to check out at noon. They should honor their commitments! Remember that the first woman who was yelling was merely the maid! It takes at least three of us to get our uncle up, out of bed, and into the car. We arrived at 11:30 a.m. to find a woman shrieking at my two uncles that they needed to be out by 11 a.m. I hope our tribe no longer supports this abominable location!

Mitchell asserts that they sought an extra hour past the stipulated checkout time of 11 a.m., which hotel staff did not grant, leading to the scuffle in the lobby.

The emotional incident prompted further family members of Mitchell to state that Carrette and LeFountain were “disrespectful” to their relative.

“He was scheduled to leave at 11! This is the entire point. Carrette answers aggressively in the video, “I don’t care if he’s a quadriplegic.”

On the phone with the police, LaFountain states that they had “very disruptive guests in the lobby” and that Mitchell recorded them because they were “stupid white people.”

On video, neither Mitchell nor her family members can be heard discussing the race of the two hotel staff.

KRTV reports that a responding officer de-escalated the tension between the two parties.

As of Friday morning, Mitchell’s video has been seen approximately 900K times.

Mitchell told the source, “I just want an apology to my uncle and my family as a whole, as we did not deserve to be treated that way by the establishment we paid for.”

The Great Falls Inn asserts that it has received threatening phone calls as a result of TikTok’s popularity.

According to hotel staff, Mitchell uttered thirty threats throughout the altercation, and neither the hotel nor its personnel are racist.

The Great Falls Inn sent a statement to KRTV declaring, “We are fair, unbiased, and trustworthy. Each guest is treated with dignity and respect. This occurrence is quite unfortunate. Because our guests’ safety is paramount. Concern arose on the extent of disruption. The police were contacted, and the situation has been resolved.”
