Security Scare at Museum of Liverpool During Labour Conference Fringe Event
The Museum of Liverpool, where a Labour conference fringe event was taking place, was temporarily closed due to a security concern that led to an evacuation.
The incident unfolded as police investigated a suspicious item inside the building.
Bomb Squad Investigation and Reopening
Merseyside Police, responding to the situation, cordoned off the Museum of Liverpool and called in the bomb squad to assess the situation.
The focus of the investigation was a ‘suspicious item’ found within the premises. Fortunately, the subsequent examination revealed that the item was, in fact, an old World War Two training device.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the device was deemed safe and posed no risk to the public. Following this determination, the museum, initially closed as a precaution, was subsequently reopened.
Evacuation of Politicians and Attendees
During the security incident, Member of Parliament Paula Barker and MP Justin Madders, along with other panellists, were asked to leave the building.
This evacuation occurred while the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) was hosting a discussion on ‘rebooting levelling up for the next general election.’
Attendees, as well as the remaining panel members, which included IPPR North director Zoe Billingham, Steve Rotheram, Ryan Shorthouse, and Nick Plumb, were also requested to evacuate as a precaution.

Merseyside Police expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during the incident and emphasized their commitment to promptly responding to safety concerns.
