Mum scam: Victorian Police charge 21-year-old Melbourne man for posing as victims’ child

A man from Melbourne has been charged for allegedly defrauding his victims using the burgeoning scheme known as “Hi Mum.”

A 21-year-old man has been charged after allegedly scamming customers online through an emerging scam nicknamed, 'Hi Mum'
Police in Victoria detained a 21-year-old man from Templestowe on suspicion of online fraud involving the sale of electrical goods.

The police believe that he used the ‘Hi Mum’ SMS scam to defraud victims of “considerable sums of money.”

This sort of fraud, which has been utilized in numerous attacks in recent years, derives its name from a text message from an unknown mobile phone purporting to be the recipient’s child.

A 21-year-old man has been charged for allegedly defrauding online clients with a new scheme dubbed ‘Hi Mum’

The con involves sending a text message from an unknown mobile phone number pretending to be the recipient’s child. Its prevalence has increased in recent years.

The con artist then seeks to establish a relationship based on lies before requesting a loan or payment on their behalf.

The accused is accused of participating in five fraudulent transactions in Ringwood, Mitcham, Doncaster East, Mill Park, and Narre Warren.

According to the police, the products were obtained through the use of fraudulent paperwork.The scam, which has been growing in popularity recently, involves sending a text message from an unknown mobile phone number claiming to be the recipient's child

Multiple varieties of the “Hi Mum” fraud are circulating, according to the federal government. These communications assert that the recipient has lost their credit card and request that funds be sent.

Five counts of gaining property by deceit were filed against the 21-year-old male.
