Monday’s 7.6 quake off Mexico’s Pacific coast prompted a capital earthquake warning


An earthquake warning went out in the capital on Monday after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Mexico’s central Pacific coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which first estimated the magnitude of the quake as 7.5, said there were no early reports of damage from the tremor that occurred at 1:05 p.m. local time.

It said that the epicenter of the earthquake was 9.4 miles deep and located 23 miles southeast of Aquila, close to the border between the states of Colima and Michoacan.

Less than an hour earlier, in a statewide earthquake simulation commemorating significant quakes that occurred on the same day in 1985 and 2017, seismic sirens began to sound.
