Mohloli Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation (SoS), the first inland school to provide maritime studies, has reached another milestone with the first batch of matriculants to pass maritime economics.
The school in Sharpeville, Vaal, had a 100 percent pass rate for marine economics.
Gomolemo Rampa passed the course with honors. According to the acting principal, Mohlodi Makua, all 42 students who took the maritime economics exam passed.
Due to its proximity to the VaalRiver, Mohloli was established in February 2019 as a SoS with a focus on nautical studies. In 2020, the school began maritime economics with a group of 10th graders as the inaugural intake.
The school is one of eight out of twenty specialized schools with an overall pass percentage of over 90%.
“We achieved a 93.8% pass rate and 51 distinctions,” said Makua, adding that out of 210 students who took the examinations, 114 passed the bachelor’s level, 64 passed the diploma level, and 19 passed the upper certificate level.
Seven of the thirteen students who did not make the cut, according to Makua, did not write all topics.
Kgontse Motlhabe is the school’s top student with a total of six distinctions, falling short of a perfect score only in Sesotho. Each of Bohang Moremi and Lesego Seabo earned four honors.
This year, five of the school’s 12th-grade students will take marine science for the first time as part of their matriculation examinations. This group is enrolled in eight courses.
In conjunction with Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, the school will introduce marine science in 2020, with five 10th graders participating in an online pilot program for the subject.
This year, marine science is given as a course beginning in 10th grade. In 2016, the Gauteng provincial government opened the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation in Emndeni, Soweto. This school concentrates on engineering, mathematics, and science, ICT, and commerce and business.
The schools offer a blend of theory and practical work in engineering, mathematics, physics, and ICT; business and entrepreneurship; sports; and performing and creative arts to satisfy the demands of Gauteng’s five economic corridors.
By the end of the first quarter of 2019, the Gauteng department of education expects to convert fourteen additional schools in the province into schools of speciality.
