Avanti West Coast announced that its managing director would resign effective September 15.

Phil Whittingham was basically fired last month following a schedule breakdown.

The Department of Transport said that Avanti’s contract will not be terminated.

Ministers faced demands to revoke the contract of a major railway company last night, after the company’s CEO was essentially fired over a schedule fiasco.

Phil Whittingham, the six-figure managing director of Avanti West Coast, will resign effective September 15.

Due to persistent personnel shortages, the operator was forced to cease fare sales and refund thousands of tickets last month.

According to sources, Mr. Whittingham was forced out due to worries at transport behemoth FirstGroup, the operator’s primary owner.

Transport spokeswoman for Labour, Louise Haigh, spearheaded demands for Avanti to be deprived of its contract, stating, “This failed operator has caused millions of people travel misery.”

Former transportation minister Norman Baker said, “Immediate action is required to restore adequate service.”

However, the Department of Transport said yesterday night that Avanti’s contract will not be terminated.
