Openreach, the company responsible for internet access across the UK, has announced its plans to migrate millions of households to faster full-fibre internet.

In a bid to meet the growing digital demands of today, Openreach will no longer offer copper connectivity to internet service providers such as BT, Sky, and TalkTalk.

Benefits of Full-Fibre Connectivity:

Newer fibre-to-the-premises connections can provide internet speeds exceeding 900Mbps, compared to a maximum of around 70Mbps achievable through copper wires.

With increased reliance on streaming, downloading, and remote work, the boost in speed and reliability is highly sought after, motivating Openreach’s push towards full fibre.

The Switchover Process:

Starting from 2024, 119 new locations will no longer have the option to purchase plans based on outdated copper connectivity.

This change will apply to new contracts, including switches, upgrades, or re-grades of service.

While the transition brings improved speed and reliability, it’s important to note that upgrading to fibre may require drilling new cables through walls and could incur additional costs.

As an example, Sky offers a deal with basic speeds priced at £17 for the rest of the year, but those seeking 900Mbps downloads would need to pay £56 per month, almost £40 more.

Openreach has released a comprehensive list of the locations that will be affected by the discontinuation of copper connections.

These locations include East Dean, Colwyn Bay, Hitchin, Lancaster, Sevenoaks, Mold, Rugeley, and many more.
