Dr Gunnar Beck, a German MEP for the populist Alternative for Germany party, has stated that the UK may have ‘made the right choice’ in voting for Brexit due to ‘increasing reasons and arguments’ for leaving the EU.
Beck criticized the power that the EU’s European Court of Justice has over member states, claiming that the legal body centralizes power to Brussels, at the expense of individual states.
He argued that the UK’s decision to leave may allow the country to make many of its domestic policies, despite the EU still having control over Northern Ireland and the UK being part of the European Court of Human Rights.
Beck stated that the European Court of Justice and its judges are constantly making politics for a more centralized and powerful EU at the expense of member states and their citizens.
Beck added that Brexit has not gone smoothly due to ‘open sabotage’ by the EU, but the power of the European Court of Justice means that the UK made the ‘right choice’ in leaving the EU.
He stated that the UK now has ‘full independence’ and can set its own immigration, monetary, and security policies.
However, in reality, the UK does not have full independence from the EU, with Northern Ireland still under the bloc’s influence, and the UK still part of the EHRC, which has prevented the government from enforcing strict border controls.
Despite this, the influence of the EU in the UK has declined since Brexit, particularly when compared to other member states like Poland and Hungary, which have been fined for introducing laws that go against Brussels’ values.
In November 2021, the European Commission sued Poland in the EU’s top court over violations of EU law by the Polish Constitutional Tribunal and its case law.
The lawsuit is part of a wider clash between the EU and Poland over the rule of law, which has already resulted in the suspension of EU funds for Warsaw.
Similarly, the EU has held up billions in funding to Budapest over concerns that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has overseen widespread official corruption and violated the bloc’s rule-of-law standards.
Orbán has referred to the EU as an ’empire’ that seeks to dominate Hungary.
Despite these criticisms, Orbán won his fourth-straight term in office in 2022 and stated that Hungary would not allow the flag of freedom to be wrenched from the hands of the Hungarian people.
