According to a report issued by the North Carolina medical examiner’s office on Monday, former NFL receiver Charles Johnson committed suicide by overdosing on drugs in July 2017.

Johnson, 50, was discovered dead in a hotel room around 61/2 miles from his Raleigh, North Carolina, residence on July 17, a day after his wife, Tanisha, reported him missing. According to the report, Johnson died from “acute oxycodone, hydrocodone, and mirtazapine toxicity” and had no active prescriptions or medical history.

According to USA TODAY Sports, the report stated, “He had recently purchased a funeral and cremation service and had been acting strangely in the previous week.”

The police of Raleigh were dispatched to a Hampton Inn to conduct a welfare check on a guest who had not checked out. According to the report, Johnson was found motionless on the bed and pronounced dead at the scene. According to the investigation, he paid for the hotel two days earlier, returned home, and then departed again, leaving behind his wallet, cell phone, keys, and vehicle.

After being picked 17th overall by the Steelers in 1994 out of Colorado, Johnson spent nine years in the National Football League. He played his first five seasons in Pittsburgh, where he ranked tenth in the league in yards per reception (16.8) and led the team in receiving yards (1.010) in his third season. Before retiring after the 2002 season, he played for the Patriots, Eagles, and Bills. He ranks sixteenth all-time among Steelers receivers.
