During the opening of reservoir three and the recommissioning of aqueduct one by Umgeni Water, Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu stated that access to water is a right for all South African people.

Friday, Mchunu addressed the crowd gathered at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant for the celebration.

“In South Africa, each and every citizen has the right to water and access to it. Mchunu will emphasize that each metropolitan area has taps and each rural settlement has one communal tap.

“We must all work together, as water is essential to life and a fundamental human right.” The stability of these pipes in this location has been ensured by a number of pillars.”

He pushed his audience to collaborate with the government, stating, “In this process, we have learnt to cooperate with each other, we have realized the strength of working together, and we have discovered that we accomplish more when we collaborate.

“We will ensure that this collaboration grows throughout the sector and that it is successful. I am putting a lot of emphasis on collaboration, particularly in the water industry, since we recognize that although fixing pipes may appear to be a simple task, in reality it is not.

The flooding that ravaged areas of KwaZulu-Natal in April and May of 2022 seriously damaged Aqueducts 1 and 2. Due to detected safety issues with the water storage facility, the reservoir was taken offline in 2019 for renovations.

The Durban Heights reservoir three is a 350ml reservoir located outside of the Durban central business district that provides drinking water to more than 500,000 residents of the city and its environs.
