Outback Wrangler Matt Wright paid tribute to his late friend and co-star Chris ‘Willow’ Wilson on the first anniversary of his death. Wilson died in a helicopter crash while collecting crocodile eggs in a remote area of West Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory in February 2022. Wright was hit with seven criminal charges over Wilson’s death, including destroying evidence and attempting to pervert the course of justice. However, he strenuously denied any wrongdoing and is yet to enter a plea.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Wright remembered Wilson as someone who had a ‘sparkle in his eye’ and ‘made the most of life.’ The post featured clips of the two friends on their hit Netflix series, sinking beers together, wading through mud, swimming in outback waterholes, and talking about how much they loved working in the NT.
The crash occurred when three helicopters set off from Noonamah for a crocodile egg collection operation in West Arnhem Land. The crew flew to a staging area in King River, and two of the three helicopters left to begin collecting eggs 12km away. The third helicopter, carrying Wilson and his pilot Sebastian Robinson, began their operation at a nearby nest. Wilson’s body was found lying 40m away from the wreckage, while the pilot was critically injured. Wright and two other men were later hit with charges in relation to the crash.
Wright’s post came a week before he is due to appear in court on March 8. His charges include attempting to pervert the course of justice, destroying evidence, fabricating evidence, two counts of unlawful entry, making a false declaration, and interfering with witnesses. The NT police investigation is expected to be completed by early March, and Wright, along with the two other men charged in relation to the crash, is due to reappear in court on March 8. Wright became a household name more than a decade ago as the star of the National Geographic Channel series Outback Wrangler.
