Man Charged with Public Order Offence for Displaying Image

A man has been charged with a public order offence after a picture of six-year-old Sunderland fan and cancer victim Bradley Lowery was held up at a football match.

Shocking pictures showed a supporter displaying the image at the Sheffield Wednesday vs. Sunderland fixture at Hillsborough on Friday evening.

Dale Houghton, 31, Faces Legal Action

Dale Houghton, 31, from Rotherham, was arrested yesterday and has now been charged with a Public Order offence.

Houghton has been remanded in custody and will appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning, South Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

Second Individual Arrested

A 27-year-old man, also arrested yesterday, has been released on police bail while further enquiries are conducted.

Young Sunderland mascot Bradley died in 2017 after he was diagnosed with a rare cancer neuroblastoma when he was just 18 months old.

His story touched many across the world and he shared a close friendship with then-Sunderland star Jermain Defoe, who took him out onto the pitch before several matches.

During his brave battle, he was a special guest of BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year in 2016.
