Louisiana couple arrested for 1992 cold case murder of a newborn girl in Mississippi after new DNA evidence

Inga Johansen Carriere and Andrew K. Carriere II, both 50, were charged with first-degree murder for the smothering and disposal of their infant daughter in a Mississippi restaurant dumpster.

The body was found by a farmer, who collected garbage to feed his animals, and was wrapped in a towel and placed in a trash bag with other pieces of garbage.

The case went cold until 2021, when the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation offered to help by conducting forensic genetic testing of evidence that was collected at the crime scene.

DNA testing identified matching grandparents who lived in Louisiana, and the Carrieres were found to be the infant’s parents. The couple was charged with murder and desecration of a body and taken into custody.

Freedy Drennan, a former investigator who worked on the case decades ago, expressed gratitude for the persistence of his successors as he visited the baby’s grave at a local cemetery.

Louisiana State Police issued a statement commending the advancements in forensic technology and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to bring justice to victims and their families.
